Vin Diesel declared in a meeting with Variety that potential turn offs were in the beginning periods of development.[9][10] A turn off movie based on two characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw was reported by Universal and set with discharge date of July 26, 2019,[11] with Variety detailing that Shane Black was being considered to direct and Morgan coming back to compose the script.[12] The declaration of the turn off incited a reaction on Instagram by Tyrese Gibson, condemning Johnson for causing the ninth Fast and Furious movie to be deferred for another year.[11]

On October 23, 2017, Dwayne Johnson posted a video on Instagram which demonstrated the completed content for the turn off, titled Hobbs and Shaw. In February 2018, David Leitch entered converses with coordinate the film, which was affirmed later that April.[13] In March 2018, it was accounted for that the film would begin generation in September 2018.[14] In May 2018, the discharge date of the film was pushed back seven days to August 2, 2019.[15]
